Concerning the Efficacy of Acupuncture


A World Health Organization report entitled Acupuncture: Review and analysis of reports on controlled clinical trials (2002), reflecting research through 1998, indicates that acupuncture is a useful method of treatment for many disorders. (http://www.who.int/medicines/library/ trm/acupuncture/clinicreportsacupuncture.shtml).  A partial list is included below: 

1. Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proved through controlled trials to be an effective treatment:

Pain:
  • Pain from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Facial pain (including TMJ)
  • Headache
  • Musculoskeletal pain, including elbow, knee, hand, foot
  • Low back pain
  • Sciatic pain
  • Pain in dentistry (including dental pain and TMJ dysfunction)


Women's issues:
  • Primary dysmenorrhea
  • Pregnancy issues (induction of labor, correction of malposition of fetus, morning sickness)

Digestive disorders:
  • Nausea and vomiting (including nausea and vomiting after radiation and chemotherapy)
  • Acute stomach pain (in peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis, and gastrospasm)

Colds & allergies:
  • Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)

Emotional disorders:
  • Depression (including depression following stroke)

Systemic problems:
